Adding Green Features during the Construction of a New Home

*Read my Disclosure
Lots of people who build their own home are overwhelmed by all of the decisions they need to make. They are also overwhelmed by the fact that their life has become completely dedicated to making choices regarding different features of their home. However, it’s important for individuals in this situation not to get bogged down, especially when it comes to making choices that involve the energy efficiency of their new home. This is the perfect time for a person to add some green features. Of course, green features are great for the environment. However, they can also save a homeowner a lot of money in the long run and make the home more marketable if they decide to sell it in the future.

The first green feature to consider is a programmable thermostat. They can help cut utility bills and save energy. These thermostats can be preset to keep the home at about 68 degrees during the winter and 78 degrees during the summer. They can even be set by a weekday program, making the home more comfortable during the time that you will actually be there.

A second green feature to consider is low flow plumbing fixtures. Remodeling contractors and home builders can recommend shower heads, toilets and faucets that will help to conserve water and decrease the amount of money spent on the water bill. Speaking with a contractor is a good idea since low flow toilets and other plumbing fixtures have their pros and cons.

When it comes to the appliances that will be used in the home, like the refrigerator and wash machine, it’s important to choose Energy Star appliances. Most individuals are familiar with this symbol. However, few people realize that this is actually a government initiative that began with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For the most part, Energy Star appliances are usually about the same price as other products. However, you can save a lot of money on energy and on water use if you choose these products.

Another green feature is a green roof. If you can afford solar panels that is an excellent path to take to save energy and reduce harmful effects on the environment, but they can be quite expensive. One alternative is installing a metal roof. SHS Roofing says, "Metal sheets are relatively inexpensive, easy to install, and offer tremendous energy-saving opportunities."

There are so many decisions that need to be made when building a new home. Make sure the decisions you make will benefit you now and in the future. Talk to your home builder about using sustainable materials, energy efficient windows, proper landscaping techniques, tankless water heaters and other features of the home that are better for the environment and can help save money.

  1. If I ever build a home, the one thing I would definitely want would be one of those new hot water heaters that are really small & just heat water as it passes through when you turn the hot water on! No more huge tanks of water constantly heating up even if not being used!

  2. I plan to, as they die, replace all my appliances for Energy Star ones.
