Pet Grooming Essentials You Never Knew You Needed

You know I have had dog a dog all my life and I truly consider myself to be an expert in all things furry.  After working in pet stores and with rescues as a teenager and young adult, I always thought I was prepared for it all regardless of the kind of dog I had - breed, age, sex.  However, it wasn't until our most recent pup that I learned of a few more essentials I had never considered.

First and foremost, we now have a Great Dane who just turned a year old and she's already over 100 pounds (and still growing).  Caring for her is just not the same as caring for any other average sized dog.  As an adult I've only had short haired dogs so I've never had a need for brushing and bathing my dogs on a regular basis.  They have always stayed pretty clean being indoor dogs...until now.

Khaleesi is a very needy and demanding dog.  She loves to run outside but loves to come indoors and cuddle.  Unfortunately, something as simple as petting her can be pretty gross so I need to better keep them clean in between those deep grooming and bathing sessions.  "HandsOn Gloves are a revolutionary concept that reaches far beyond the traditional curry combs, mitts and shedders on the market today."

HandsOn Gloves are nitrile, PVC and nylon 5 fingered gloves textured with scrubbing nodules on the fingers and palms.  Perfect for massaging and combing your pets hair, the gloves help promote a healthy skin and coat.  They easily stay on wet or dry so I can use them on my pups inside when petting them and outside at bath time.  I never really had thought about using something other than a traditional brush but now I can't imagine not having a pair around the house for my furry babies!

Because of how important it is in being a responsible pet owner, we've always made sure each of our dogs were spayed or neutered.  I've always done so because of how much the rescues I worked for stressed it's importance.  With our newest addition, I recently learned this isn't always healthiest for the dog when done at a young age.

Not only can it stunt the growth and development of a dog but it can severely affect their hormone development as well as causing incontinence issues for your pup.  Because of learning all this new information, we've decided not to spay Khaleesi until after her 2nd heat cycle per our vet's recommendation. Thus, my need for another unforeseen "grooming and hygiene" essential...dog diapers.

Not only am I an econthusiast but anyone who has ever tried to put a child's diaper on a dog knows this is no task for just anyone.  From cutting the hole and getting one strapped on correctly without it ripping to not being made for a dog (versus a child) and the wastefulness that comes with baby diapers to begin with...So when I discovered the Luxury Reusable Dog Diapers from Pet Magasin, I knew I needed at least one set on hand.

These are "washable, easy-to-use diaper wraps for dogs. Useful for untrained puppies, females in heat, and dogs that suffer from excitement urination or incontinence".  Not only are these super absorbent but the outer layer is leak proof and dogs don't have the same desire (or ability) to chew it off like with disposable diapers.  They even have Belly wraps for male dogs with incontinence of any kind.

With a Great Dane, diapering is no easy task but the velcro sides make it quick and easy to secure in place.  I personally love the bright colors even on my black baby.  I am pretty happy about having these around for her heat cycles as well as later down the road if she has any incontinence issues which can be common for older Dane females.  I recommend checking out the pet products Pet Magasin has to offer for pets of all kinds!
